Patch Tuesday Primer for February 2014
There are 5 Security Bulletins for this month's patch Tuesday coming out of Redmond. Microsoft lists 2 as critical (remote cod execution possibilities) and 3 as important (elevation of privilege, information disclosure, and DOS). The interesting tidbit is that the first critical bulletin DOES NOT, yes you heard that right, DOES NOT affect Windows XP; nor does it affect Vista or Server 2003/2008. It does, however, affect Server 2008 R2 / 2012 ans well as Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1. If you happen to be running Server Core, then you are safe; the benefits actually pay off this month.
The other critical bulletin affect Microsoft Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange server. Remote Code Execution in a Microsoft security product? Oh, the irony! The rest of the patches pretty much cover the gamut of Microsoft Software with the exception being the DOS vulnerability which affect only Windows 8 and Server 2012 but not 8.1 or 2012 R2. As always, have fun starting the One, Some, Many patching dance tomorrow. I know I will....
