Xerox Copiers on OSX (stapling / hole punch function)
For those working in IT, have you ever felt deja vu? Like, "I've been here before?" To add to my legacy of fixing OSX software that should work, but just doesn't; here is a post on enabling the staple function on Xerox copiers; tested on OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion) Update: Now tested and verified to work on 10.8 (Mountain Lion). If you are looking for my post on Toshiba copiers with the Department Code debacle, Click Here
Grab the appropriate driver for your model of Xerox copier, install it, then try to set the stapling function; just try to find it :-) Here is what you need to do to enable it:
1.) Launch Safari ( Other browsers just don't seem to render everything properly, at times)
2.) Direct Safari to the URL: http://localhost:631/
2a.) For OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) you must first enable the cups web interface with the following command in the terminal: cupsctl WebInterface=yes
3.) Click on the "Printers" tab at the top of the page
4.) Click on the copier that you would like to enable the options for
5.) In the second (not the first) drop down selection box towards the upper left of the page, select
"Set Default Options" (This is where most other browsers cease to function properly)
6.) Click on "PaperOutpu"
7.) Scroll down (Under Lion some options will be hidden without any indicator that there is, indeed,
more there)
8.) For the staple option to appear, set it to 1 staple
For the whole punch option, set it to hole punch
***Note: Despite what it sounds like, you did not just force the copier to always punch holes or
staple. This step seems to only make those options available under the print dialog of any
application.
9.) Now scroll all the way to the bottom of the options and click "Set Default Options"
(you will most likely see the option you just set highlighted in RED. Don't panic, move on :-)
9.) You must now click on "Options Installed"
10.) Set "Finisher Output Tray" to: "Office Finisher"
11.) Click "Set Default Options" and enter an administrative password if prompted.
Now, you should be able to do a File --> Print --> Select Copier --> Show details --> Then, where it says the name of your application you are currently in, select "Xerox Features" from that drop down list. There, you should see the option that you enabled; wasn't there before, was it?
